Susan Lea Smith
Susan is our restless wanderer. In addition to traveling to Haiti twice a year, she travels on behalf of the Ecumenical Water Network, World Council of Churches, participating in its water justice work throughout the globe. Susan represents the United Church of Christ on issues of water justice.
Susan serves as Executive Director of JUST Water.
Water has been the center of Susan's work as a scholar, law professor, and litigator over the past 30 years. Susan is a Professor of Law at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon and teaches environmental and natural resources courses. She has shepherded the work of the Central Pacific Conference, United Church of Christ, and its congregations in funding water, sanitation, and health education projects in Kenya, Honduras, and Haiti over the course of the past seven years. She works directly with Mouvman Peyizan Papay and other peasant groups to plan those projects in rural Haiti.
Jim Doane
Don't expect Jim to look like this often; he's allergic to suits. But he had a good excuse: he was receiving the 2013 Distinguished Public Service Award from the American Water Works Association, the folks who bring us clean water and sanitation.
Jim is on the JUST Water technical team working on the Hinche water treatment plant and serves on JUST Water Board. A water resources engineer for 40+ years, Jim also serves as a Tualatin Valley Water District Commissioner. He was formerly Chief Engineer of the City of Portland Water Bureau.
Barry Buchanan
Don't worry, Barry's seldom this serious; he's a Kiwi quick with a quip and he's got a mind like a steel trap, a perpetual grin, and a heart of gold. Barry works on the JUST Water technical team for the Hinche water treatment plant and serves on JUST Water Board. Barry brings a wealth of international drinking water development experience to JUST Water , including stints as a senior project manager
with MWH, Thames Water, and RW Beck. His current day job is doing water resources planning and management on behalf of Oregon's capitol city, Salem.
